Polyvagal Breathwork
Polyvagal breathwork is a practice that involves tapping into and regulating the autonomic nervous system. It can help people shift out of a chronic fight-or-flight defense response. Yoga and breathwork are two of the primary paths for polyvagal wellness.

History of polyvagal breathwork
Inspired by the work of psychologist and neuroscientist Dr. Stephen Porges, polyvagal theory posits that the autonomic nervous system is not a simple fight-or-flight mechanism but a complex system with three distinct branches. Dr. Porges’ theory identifies the ventral vagal, sympathetic, and dorsal vagal pathways, each associated with specific physiological and emotional states. The polyvagal theory addresses the ways that people shift in and out of different fight-or-flight states as a results of triggers during their daily activities.
Polyvagal breathwork leverages this knowledge to promote self-regulation and enhance overall nervous system flexibility by regulating the body’s responses to stress and promoting a sense of safety and connection. Through intentional breathwork exercises, individuals explore the nuances of their nervous system, fostering resilience and well-being. Polyvagal theory continues to gain traction and become more popular in wellness circles.
What's polyvagal breathwork like?
Polyvagal breathwork is a more gentle practice based in bringing a sense of safety and calm to the nervous system. Perhaps even more than other forms of breathwork, polyvagal breathwork is focused on healing and self-regulation. Exercises are generally more slow and yin in nature.
